The Gas and Material Analysis Laboratory provides a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving using state-of-the-art instrumentation and technologies.  The Gas Analysis section conducts general and non-routine analysis on gas and cryogenic propellants, pressurants and hydraulic fluids and the Materials Laboratory conducts failure analysis and evaluates contaminants on metallic and non-metallic materials. Major analytical tests included: material identification, gas, cryogenic and liquid analysis. The analysis are performed using methods of chemical and gas analysis and other specialized techniques.

The Materials Lab provides investigative and evaluative support for failure analysis and for identification of unknown materials and contaminants. In addition, the lab performs surface feature characterizations for fractures and flaws in flight and ground support equipment. Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) acquires a 3D image to reveal fractures, inclusions, physical measurements, and evidence of stress and/or corrosion. X-ray surface mapping can be performed to display the arrangement and distribution of elements and is useful to assess the phase composition of alloys or sample homogeneity. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometers (FTIR) identify and quantify a chemical compound according to its molecular spectra.
